There are two main ways to get to Porta del Sol from the Luis
Muñoz
Marín International Airport: go west along the northern coast to Isabela
or south to Ponce and then west to Guánica. This driving guide is written
as though you take the northern route and start in Isabela. However,
if you want to start in Guánica using the southern route, simply turn
to page 44 and read this guide back to front. Both routes start
as follows: as you exit the airport, stay in the right lane and
take Rt 26
west to
San Juan and Isla Verde. Move to the left lane and follow Rt
26 to San Juan. You exit right to Rt 22, Hato Rey, Bayamón and Caguas
(this is the 1st sign for the exit, the 2nd sign for the exit
reads Rt 18, Rt 22, Bayamón,
Caguas and Río Piedras). You go through the Minillas Tunnel. Then the
route splits between Caguas and Bayamón.
Isabela Route: After the Minillas Tunnel, take the exit to Bayamón from the right lanes. The 1st sign for the exit says Rt 22 West, Bayamón and Guaynabo (the 2nd sign for the exit says Rt 22 West, Bayamón, Guaynabo and Arecibo). Rt 22 ends in Hatillo. You take the left lanes to Rt 2, Mayagüez and Arecibo. Take one of the exits for Isabela (Rt 113, Rt 474 or Rt 112).
Guánica Route: After the Minillas Tunnel, stay
in the left lane and take the exit to Rt 18 South, Río Piedras, Caguas and Ponce. Follow Rt 18, Caguas, Cupey and Ponce. This turns in to Rt 52 South, Ponce and Caguas. Follow Rt 52 all the way to its end in Ponce. In Ponce take Rt 2 west toward Mayagüez. Take Rt 116 into Guánica.
